public health insurance

The cost of public health insurance is ~130€ per month. This is a discounted student rate, available to students under 30 years old. The 14 semester rule that you may have seen elsewhere is no longer valid as of January 2020.

You can opt out of state insurance by applying for private insurance. In this case, the university must grant an exemption from insurance (Befreiung von der Krankenversicherungspflicht). This can be obtained from any of the insurance companies that offer public insurance. Please note that it is an irreversible process. The exemption will be valid for the duration of the entire study. It will only be possible to return to public insurance when employment begins after schooling.
